Who is TV Mama?

TV Mama is a smart, sassy, sophisticated woman with a love of technology and gadgets, who is eternally youthful and mature. She’s your best friend’s sexy mom when you are about 14, and she is the loyal and loving woman you love as an adult who will support you – as long as you support her drive, ambition and desires, as well.

TVMama has been around for more than 50 years, but she is as young today as she was then. She has changed her look (who hasn’t?) and her gadgets. But she remains the same youthful, effervescent, intelligent and sexy woman she was at her creation.

Today’s TV Mama has many foremothers. In coming weeks, we will tell you about them. We invite you to nominate your own TV Mamas. They needn’t be celebrities or characters in TV shows. They can be the woman in your life who knows more about your TV than you do. They may be your boss or co-worker at a media or production company. They may even be your “Cable Gal.” Here is the first of our TV Mamas.

The first TV Mama was actress Gertrude Berg, who played Molly Goldberg on the ethnic TV comedy “The Goldbergs,” which ran on TV from 1949-1954. The show, a TV version of a popular radio program, featured Berg as a warm, humorous and stereotypically smothering Jewish mama.

But what really made her a TV Mama is that she was one of the first, if not the first, woman to create, write, produce and star in a long-running hit. She is currently the subject of a documentary in process by the filmmaker who produced a hit about famed baseball player Hank Greenberg.

(Editor’s Note: There are also at least four different pop, blues and soul songs of the last 50 years titled “TV Mama.” We plan to tell you about them, as well.)
