The Basics of Navigation

What is navigation? It’s a way for your Web site visitors to move between pages. The most important part about navigation is that it should almost never take more than two clicks to move from one page on your Web site to another.

Depending on the situation, it can sometimes be three clicks, but two clicks is generally the best method. If it takes more than two clicks to get from one section on your site to another, you should think about redesigning it so that moving between pages is easier. Let’s go over the different types of navigation.

The Navigation Bar

The first method is to use a navigation bar. This is simply a bar that contains numerous links to different sections of the Web site. Take a look at the main elements. There are numerous tabs that refer to different sections of the Web site:Welcome, Electronics,Tools & Hardware, and so forth. Within each section there are some subsections, such as Top Sellers and Today’s Deals in the Welcome tab.

This type of horizontal navigation bar is found on many Web sites (www.maneeshsethi.com, for one). Some Web sites use a vertical bar instead.
