Optimizing the basic structure of your Web site greatly increases the likelihood that search engines will successfully locate and index your content. Search-engine ranking algorithms analyze numerous on-site factors when determining where a Web page ranks for particular search terms.

Some of these factors include your Web site content, your domain name, whether or not your Web site works on all browsers, your Web site structure, your navigational linking structure, the accessibility of all your pages, and your credibility.

There are many things that you can do to optimize for these factors, including choosing reliable Web hosting, choosing an appropriate domain name, optimizing your site for all Web browsers, creating a logical site structure and navigational menus, generating a sitemap, and creating an About Us page and a privacy policy page. On-site factors are absolutely critical to the process of search-engine optimization, or SEO. A well-optimized design and structure help to improve the overall performance of your Web site, help users to navigate it, and allow search engines to find and index all your content.

During the process of Web site design or redesign, ask yourself the following two basic questions: Does my Web site appeal to visitors? Is it search-engine friendly? Once you answer those two essential questions, build each page as a balance between the needs of the search engines and the experience of the user.
