Atila Popularity isn’t everything

I remember the first time I heard the name YouTube. At the time, YouTube wasn’t nearly the giant it is today. It is currently the fourth most visited website according to Alexa.com. People upload homemade videos and their favorite movies,…

MSM way behind on PC-TV convergence story

Duh. The MSM are sooo far behind on this story it’s not even funny (actually, it is funny). Investor’s Business Daily is so caught up with its coverage of large companies it doesn’t notice all the mice running around the elephants’ feet that will eventually trip up the big beasts.

A story this week that featured comments from Joost’s Mike Volpi (he’s everywhere, isn’t he?):

  • Long term, getting digital content onto viewers’ TV set is the Holy Grail of Web video, analysts say. (Hello! That’s why TVMama is here - to tell the IBD’s of the world and their readers what is going on)
  • Analysts expect a more open PC-to-TV device to emerge eventually. (True enough - but don’t we know that already?

That’s why AppleTV has opened up to YouTube (as a starter), and Joost is going for set-top box placement. We think those first steps will trump Microsoft’s own closed system through Xbox360, which limits users to movies or TV shows from Microsoft’s Xbox Live Marketplace.

Here’s another obvious point, this time from an analyst we suspect make a lot more money than we do: “The competition is intense,” said James McQuivey of Forrester Research.

Actually, here is a point we agree with, from Dennis Miller, a general partner in Spark Capital, one of Veoh’s investors: He says there is an institutional industry interest in keeping it this way. Closed systems (like Joost) make it easy to deliver programming with hard-to-skip advertising and anti-copying technology.

He goes after Joost here: “I think Joost’s approach is misguided. Joost has a closed system that doesn’t blend the best of what’s on the Internet with the best of TV.”
VeohTV will carry any video available on the Web.
