  2. The lows were entirely in the shipping, where the box got sent to L.A. back to it’s origin, back to L.A., off to Kentucky, etc and eventually to me.

Was it worth the shipping fiasco? I’d rather that shipping it was as good as the product. I really love Snow Leopard and iWork.

  3. Installation of Snow Leopard 10.6 and upgrade to 10.6.1 was simple and problem free.

Unfortunately this version of the Apple operating system on my Intel Imac has significant problems with my external fire wire hard drive. After the Snow Leopard upgrade I have not been able to use this drive for even one Time Machine backup. The operation of this drive has become completely unreliable. Sometimes the drive will restart with the system, most times not. I have yet to have the drive remain operational when connected to my system for as long as one day. This same drive has operated reliably on my Imac when I was running Lepard up to the 10.5.8 version installed before Snow Leopard. Part of the problem may be due to the Western Digital MyBook drive but this drive mounts and operates reliably when connected to my older Powerbook running either my 10.5.8 Leopard partition or my 10.4.x Tiger partition.

At this point I have purchased a new external fire wire drive (adding significantly to the cost of the system upgrade) and I am evaluating its stability with Snow Leopard. My original drive is still operational, when I can get Snow Leopard to recognize it and mount it on the desktop so the drive hardware is functional. At this point I will use this drive with my Powerbook or for occasional file storage.

Apple’s recommendation was to do an SMC reset. That procedure did allow me to reconnect to the firewire bus but unfortunately the problem of unreliable operation with my older drive continues. If the new drive remains stable I may try restarting Time Machine backups. For the moment I am relying on a manual backup strategy. If the new drive displays the same inconsistent operation my only choice will be to do a complete system erase and restore Leopard 10.5.8 abandoning 10.6 until it leaves customer financed beta status.

  4. This mac box set with snow leopard was easy to install. I have not detected any problems since the program was downloaded. I’m happy with the performance of the program so far. She’s a keeper.

  5. What can I say? The upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard on a two year old Intel iMac was quick and uneventful. Likewise the install of both iLife and iWork. The iMac and a 1 month old 17″ MacBook Pro are now backing up every hour to a 1TB Time Capsule over its wireless “n” network. The whole process is automatic, seamless, and transparent to users.

This contrasts rather brilliantly to the experience I had installing service pack 2 for Windows XP a few years ago. The Microsoft “upgrade” failed mid-install and left me with an HP laptop that was a wonderful paperweight / doorstop. It took me about three months of fiddling to get the hard drive to boot to the point that I could get some files off the damned thing before formatting the drive and starting over from scratch. It would not respond to a restart of the service pack. It would not boot from the HD. It would not boot from a recovery disk. It would not boot from the OS disk. I have never allowed another Microsoft service pack to install to one of my machines. Instead, I ride them into obsolescence just as they are and then buy Macs at the end of their useful life. I also skipped the debacle that was Vista and have turned my back on Win 7. I’ve switched over fully to Apple at this point and I’m never going back. I don’t do Windows anymore.
