I purchased this book and was a bit dissapointed that there was focuse on outdated methods like mail-in responses. With the advent of the Web, we’ve cut our client’s costs by 80% and get them a 30% better response rate. Just make sure that whatever survey provider you go with offers correlation analysis, Confidence intervals, and Cumulative distribution are among the various statistical measures used to analyze your results. We’re using Vista – no other survey tool gives you all of this crucial information.

More and more social surveys are being carried out online. This book offers a helpful guide to communication scholars on how to design and implement Internet surveys.
As we all know, this thing called cyberspace is still a vast unknown territory. We need a lot of important resources to help us understand the nature of this new medium and to know the characteristics of its users. This book is one of those resources. It provides solid information on how to meet the challenges, as well as, maximize the potentials of the Internet.

Overall a great book, but if an author is going to create a new edition, I think greater care is needed when updating sections. One small example is that the price of postage stamps (when discussing mail surveys) is still listed as 32 cents. Little things, but if I’m going to pay for an updated book, I expect all of the book to be updated to reflect the current state of affairs.

Great resource for working on and building from scratch your own survey: ) Highly recommend.

This is a great book to have handy when thinking about and doing surveys. Unfortunately, it reads a little dated (already), especially when dealing with electronic media. May be worth waiting for the next edition to get a more contemporary approach to web-based surveys.
