The trouble with apple trees is, they need another tree nearby to pollinate it to produce apples. Also different varieties flower at different times, so you need one that is flowering at the same time as the neighbouring one, in order for pollination. If you have an apple tree already or a neighbour does then find out which one.Or buy 2 that flower at the same time
    see following for flowering timeshttp://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_…
If not, then you need a self pollinating apple try-
Cox, Red Windsor, or Red Falstaff
Or you buy a ‘Family Tree’ These have 3 different types of apple grafted onto the same tree. The ones I have come across have a cox, a katy and a james grieve. Maybe thats the easiest way to go.
Another thing to think about is size. Apple trees are grafted onto different rootstocks. This will determine the height of the eventual tree. The best thing to do is go to a garden centre with this info and seek help there.
Sorry for long winded answer but its not as easy as you’d think :-)

Most apples are easy to grow, I prefer Braeburn, Fuji and Pacific Rose(Late maturity)
All our apple trees are self pollinating, so you dont need a separate pollinator treehttp://www.produceoasis.com/Items_folder…

I’d go for a crab apple. You will never be able to pick many if you plant any other kind. There will be thoughtless people who will see them and say, ” Ooh! Free apples!”.

all depends upon where you live. all fruit trees are growing zone specific. post your zip code or growing zone and i would be happy to provide an answer.

Crab apple trees. Dont know if thats an actual scientific name, but there has always been one next to my house, no matter what the weather has been like. They are small, sour, and green. Like a granny smith.
